Still Photography - Book Axé Amor Amem

In a dedicated one-day studio photoshoot, we used the Sigma Art 24-70, Sony 50mm G Master, and 90mm Macro G Master lenses on the Sony a7iv camera. Supported by three flash lights with various light modifiers, we created three distinct scenes, meticulously designed by our art director Gabriela Carraccioli.
This project was developed for the book “Axé Amor Amém” by authors Claudio Soares and Tuila Jost. The book delves into Brazilian religious syncretism, highlighting the intersections between orixás and Catholic saints, celebrating syncretism as a movement of resistance and unity. The art direction was led by designer and visual artist Batman Zavareze, with design direction by Leo Eyer.
The photoshoot aimed to symbolize different ways people experience their religious beliefs and how they worship:
1. Christianity in Brazil: We researched churches and cultural symbols of Christianity to create an authentic scene reflecting the devotion and rituals of the Brazilian Christian faith.
2. African-rooted Religions: We crafted an environment reflecting the rich African heritage, highlighting figures like Saint George, related to the Orixá Ogum, to show the similarities and differences between these traditions.
3. Religious Syncretism: We recreated an Umbanda altar, inspired by traditions maintained primarily by elderly women, such as grandmothers, who follow these practices.
Each image aims to capture the essence and diversity of religious syncretism in Brazil, promoting deep reflection and evoking emotions through design and visual art.
